SLPA celebrates 26th anniversary

THE 26th Anniversary since the establishment of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will be celebrated on August 1 under the patronage of Ports and Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera, a Ministry release said yesterday.

The modernised employees canteen on the Bandaranaike Bridge will be opened by the Minister at the same time after observing religious rites according to Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths.

The shipping activities in the Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee, Point Pedro and Kankesanthurai harbours conducted by private companies initially were nationalised during the late S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike's regime in 1958.

The SLPA was formed by amalgamating the nationalized venture, under the three units, the Ports Commission, the Port Cargo Corporation and the Ports Security Service in 1979.

SLPA's present work force is around 13,300 earning a revenue of Rs. 17,000 million per year.
