CICT to invest US$ 40 m for Green Port

Colombo International Container Terminal Limited (CICT) will invest US$ 40 million to convert it to be the first Green container terminal in the region.

CICT Chief Executive Officer,Nelson Liu speaking to Daily News Business said this will be completed in less than two years.

“No doubt this development will send a signal to all stakeholders the importance of paying attention to this critical factor and we believe in working towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and care for the environment”

Based on the total container throughput handled at CICT during 2014, this initiative could bring in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions running into thousands of tonnes. The actual reduction is envisaged to be 45% of current emissions.

The Colombo Port stands to benefit greatly from this initiative as it will be one of the first ports in south Asia to fast track the “green port” concept.

Liu said he was happy with the operations in Sri Lanka and this is the reason they are reinvesting. “We have invested US$ 560 million since December 2011.”

He said that the CICT also created a landmark last September when they passed the 1 million TEUs milestone within just 8 months of operation in 2015.”This was at 686,000 for 2014 and is a 6% increase.”

The CEO said Sri Lanka has maintained an unblemished track record without a single day stoppage for any industrial action unlike some of the other competitors in the region. He also said that they hope to achieve the 1.4 million TEU target by the end of 2015.

Commercial and Marketing General Manager Tissa Wickramasinghe said the company has also offered employment for Sri Lankans in their Djibouti project enabling them to gain additional income.

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) is owned and managed by China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI), the world’s second largest global terminal operator.

CICT is the first and only deep-water terminal in the whole of South Asia capable of handling the largest modern container carriers.
