Lanka, India, Myanmar Feeder Service begins

Herbilan Shipping Pvt. Ltd, for the first time in Sri Lankan shipping industry launch a feeder service linking Sri Lanka with India and Myanmar yesterday at the Colombo Port. They would use M V HERBILAN SUCCESS vessel for this service.

“We are going to help Port Of Colombo to increase the transshipment cargo volume,” said the mentor behind this project, Herbie De Silva. He said that in addition this would also open up a untapped market in Myanmar thus enabling Sri Lankans to look at trading opportunities in growing Myanmar.

The vessel has a capacity of 1,158 TEU’s and would sail with 16 crew members on their 14 day journey linking the round trip.

Director, Herbilan Shipping Pvt. Ltd, Ivan De Almeida said that they were very disappointed and irresponsible manner of some of the bureaucracy operated in Sri Lanka. “It took us over three months from the Board of Investments, Port Authority and Shipping Authorities to get cleared for the project. The irony is that we received approval from both India and Myanmar less than three days.”

The total investment for the project is US$ 4.5 million and the parent company would make the investment. He said that at one time they wanted to abandon this project and move in to another country.

“We would set sail from Colombo to Vizag India pick up transshipment cargo - (Kolkata Nagpur, Raipur, Gunthur) and then sail to Yangon.
